What is the Thompson Technique?

Developed by Dr. J. Clay Thompson, the Thompson Technique is a chiropractic method that combines a specific system of spinal analysis with a gentle, effective adjustment approach. This technique allows for precise spinal corrections while maximizing patient comfort.

A Targeted System of Analysis

Early chiropractors observed that spinal misalignments, or subluxations, often caused one leg to appear shorter than the other. By analyzing leg length changes as the patient turns their head, practitioners can identify whether the subluxation is located in the upper, middle, or lower regions of the spine.

The Terminal Point Drop Table

A key feature of the Thompson Technique is the use of a specialized segmental “drop” table. Patients begin by stepping onto a platform, which gently lowers them into a horizontal position—helping to maintain any leg length discrepancies for accurate assessment.

The table is equipped with individual cushions or “drop pieces” that support specific areas of the spine. During the adjustment, these sections momentarily drop away, allowing the practitioner to deliver a quick, targeted thrust with less force. This controlled motion enhances the effectiveness of the adjustment while ensuring a comfortable experience for the patient.
