What is the Gonstead Technique?

Developed by Dr. Clarence Gonstead, this method draws from his background in engineering. His “foundation principle” highlights how a misalignment (subluxation) in one area of the spine can cause compensations elsewhere. Because of this, we evaluate the entire body, not just the site of discomfort, to determine where an adjustment will be most effective.

What to Expect During Your Visit

We begin with a thorough review of your health history, followed by a comprehensive spinal examination. This typically includes:

  • Full spine X-rays to identify structural issues
  • Thermal scanning using a small, heat-sensing instrument to detect temperature differences that may indicate nerve irritation
  • Palpation—carefully feeling for any bones that are out of alignment or not moving properly

Adjustments are tailored to your comfort and condition:

  • For lower spine and pelvic issues, you’ll lie on your side
  • Mid-back subluxations are addressed while you’re in a relaxed kneeling position
  • Neck adjustments are performed while seated, without any twisting or rotation

You may hear a gentle “popping” sound during your adjustment—called cavitation—which simply indicates gas release from the joint. Even if you don’t hear it, the benefits are still at work.
